The Portrayal of the Greek Economic Crisis in Czech Media

This thesis deals with the way how Czech newspaper reported about Greek debt crisis and which frames were used to illustrate Greece. In the theoretical part the history of Greece is described, since independence till the debt crisis. The historical context captures difficult times of Greek history which contributed to the spiral of dept crisis lasting from 2010 to 2018. In the following part some of the important concepts concerning agenda setting, gatekeeping and frame analysis are compared. Some of the important foreign studies concerning frame theory and even framing of the Greek debt crisis in Czech media are depicted. The methodology of the thesis is formed by a qualitative analysis of the articles from two peaks of the crisis - the first half of 2010 and the first half of 2015. In the first period the frames used by Czech media were predominantly following the German point of view and the point of view of the European creditors. Journalists only rarely reflected the real life of the Greeks which was quite different from the used stereotypes. The second period was marked by the world affairs like the immigration crisis or invasion to Ucraine and the sanctions against Russia. Media Image of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict in 2021

The bachelor thesis studies the media image of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the Czech media in 2021. The Defender of the Walls / The Sword of Jerusalem is the name of the armed conflict that took place in the territory of Israel and the Palestinian Authority in May 2021. Although it is the same armed conflict, the two opposing sides call it differently, namely Defender of the Wall by Israel and Sword of Jerusalem by the Palestinian Authority. The media image of the conflict may be similar - same conflict, different media interpretation. Therefore, the aim of the bachelor thesis is to find the frames through which Czech online newspapers (Aktuálně.cz and Novinky.cz) reported on the conflict. First, however, the theoretical part of the thesis introduces how the media construct reality and how framing actually works. Along with this, the theoretical part mentions the existing research on the framing of the Israeli- Palestinian conflict or a search of existing knowledge. The thesis then provides insight into the historical and current context of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, which is central to the orientation of the issue. Media Picture of Volunteering: Mladá fronta DNES and Svět neziskovek in 2011

The objective of this work is to survey the media picture of volunteering as provided to the public by the two Czech media - the most read quality paper in the Czech Republic Mladá fronta DNES and the professional electronic monthly Svět neziskovek. The survey consists of analysis of articles published in the respective media in 2011 for which the framing method (also called frame analysis) was used. With regard to the complexity of the phenomenon of volunteering, this work uses the theoretical concept of three paradigms (perspectives) as established by C. Rochester. These three paradigms (civil society paradigm, non-profit paradigm, volunteering as serious leisure) are identified in the articles, surveyed and mutually compared and subsequently the overall picture of volunteering as provided by the media is compiled. Quantitative evaluation of certain parameters related to volunteering within the articles (the field of voluntary activities, organizational context, age of volunteers and so forth) is also a part of this work.

Czech Film Taste in Sociological Perspective

The aim of this work is to find specific preferences of Czech film consumers. By these specific preferences it is meant the type of stories, heroes or genres which does Czech film audience prefer. The analysis is made on the most popular films (i.e. with the biggest attendance) in last twenty years using the theory of Erving Goffman, especially his concept of frame analysis. By using the terms of frame analysis the content of the selected films is compared with the same amount of the most popular films in USA. This comparison is then used to find the differences or similarities among these two different areas, but in particular it is done to underline the specifics of Czech film audience. German Salafi Jihadism: Radicalizing messages in the lectures of the German jihadi preacher Denis Cuspert

The diploma thesis "Salafi Jihadism in Germany: Radicalizing Messages in Lectures of a German Jihadi Preacher Denis Cuspert" deals with the analysis of the internet video messages disseminated by Denis Cuspert - the most significant German-speaking Jihadi-Salafi leader, in terms of the radicalization potential that is spread through his lectures. The aim of the thesis is firstly to identify the basic radicalization formulas relevant for the given research, which are to be found in the models of radicalization. In the analytical part, these radicalization categories will be applied to the argumentation strategies present in the lectures of Denis Cuspert. In order to analyse the given messages, a qualitative content analysis along with a framework analysis will be used. In connection with aims of the thesis, the framework analysis appears to be a fitting method, as it focuses on the issue of communication in terms of its mobilization potential, with an emphasis on the strategic use of language. This method can therefore be a good indicator of the extent to which the statements succeed in addressing the sympathizers of the movement and making them act. Development of Czech Asylum Policy in the perspective of public policy theories

This thesis aims at the development of the Czech asylum policy from the year 2000 to the year 2016. Asylum policy is an area that isn't in the center of the public concern for most of the time and only few actors take part in this policy. However, we can say that currently, because of the events such as the refugee crisis, the asylum policy is becoming a very ongoing topic and plays a crucial role in the public discourse. For this and other reason, in this thesis I am researching the development of asylum policy, explanation and description of changes that have happened. The development of asylum policy in the period is analyzed first the terms of practical changes, that are caused by the legislative or important events. This consists of the identification of particular periods, as well as their characteristic features. The analysis is also made in the theoretical perspective: Punctuated Equilibrium Theory (PET) and frame theory are used. The PET is suitable for explaining changes in the policy process, that can possibly occur after long periods of stability. Framing is an important feature of the PET. Lone-parent families as a public policy problem: stakeholders' frame reflection and reframing

The main theme of the work is finding an answer to the question why in the past years Czech Parliament has failed to enforce measures improving the quality of life of lone-parent families, and what could be done for these measures to be adopted. Theoretical support for answering both questions is provided by a) frame analysis (Schőn and Rein), which works with the idea of conflicting frames and bridging conflicts through reframing, and b) the theory of social construction of target groups (Schneider and Ingram). Based on an analysis of stenographic minutes from proceedings dealing with the issue of non-payment of child support (in particular with proposals for the state to pay child support first and then to receive it from the obligor) and the arrangements connected to child custody (in particular the proposal to strengthen alternating custody), conflicting frames are reconstructed (in the case of non-payment, there are three conflicting frames, in the case of child custody two). These conflicting frames, or rather the fact that they are insufficiently addressed, may be the cause of the incapacity of Czech political representation to address the above agenda. "Representation of the environment in Russian and Czech press" This diploma thesis deals with the representation of the environment in the Russian and Czech press. For my research I chose two news weekly papers: Respekt and Argumenty a fakta issued between the years 2007-2011. Quantitative content analysis and qualitative frame analysis were used for data processing. The theoretical part describes the development of the media, their influence on society, mechanism of news construction (agenda setting, news values, objectivity, bias, access to news, work with sources), the development and state of the Czech and Russian media, concepts of nature and the development of environmental reporting. In the practical part I found out how the environment and nature are viewed and interpreted by these printed media in the content of their messages. Framing of New Psychoactive substances in British Drug Policy Discourse

This thesis, New Psychoactive Substances in British Drug Policy Discourse addresses new psychoactive substances (NPS) in drug policy discourse in Great Britain between 2000-2014. It focuses on the identification of individual frames and aims to understand the different perspectives NPS can be framed in The theoretical framework of this thesis is based on the idea of social constructivism and Frame Theory. On this basis, the thesis identifies individual sponsors, the general characteristics of the problem, the injured party, the public policy implications and the value base. It identifies four frames which are present in the discourse. The first, called Fragmented, does not perceive NPS as a comprehensive problem, but as individually occurring substances. The second frame the Prohibitionist wishes to tackle the issue of NPS using new tools of prohibition. The third one, the Regulatory frame is strongly polarized towards the previous frame and wants to solve the NPS issue by creating a legally regulated market for psychoactive substances. The last, Wicked frame, perceives NPS as an unstructured problem, therefore it cannot be solved by one measure. This frame favors an expert debate and evidence in order to find the optimal solution. Act on protection of health against harmful effects of addictive substances: Development of narative of competing frames in media discourse

This diploma thesis deals with the development of tobacco control legislation with the main focus on the Act on protection of health against harmful effects of addictive substances with accent on smoking regulation in restaurants. The main line of this thesis is to determine the competing rhetorical frameworks and the main actors representing the individual frameworks which they present on the level of arguments and then to compare the development of narrative over time. At this level, the thesis focuses on the analysis of the presented rhetorical frameworks with the aim of discussing possible specific attributes that facilitated the process of reframing opposition actors, namely using the rhetorical strategy of narrative attributes of storytelling, technical terms, imagery or comparison. These goals were achieved by using a qualitative analysis of media outcomes and by using public policy documents, legal standards and other relevant documents.
